QUALIFIED LEADERS

“(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)” 1 Timothy 3:5

THE BIBLE SAYS…

1 TIMOTHY 3:1-13

“This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

THEREFORE…

WE BELIEVE THAT THE CHURCH NEEDS GODLY LEADERSHIP: Each local fellowship should have men of integrity in authority.

“For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:”   Titus 1:5

WE ACCEPT THAT CHURCH LEADERS MUST BE BLAMELESS: Only those who have one wife, and faithful children are qualified to lead the church.

“If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.”   Titus 1:6

WE KNOW THAT NOT EVERY CHRISTIAN IS QUALIFIED TO BE A LEADER: Leaders in the church must be gentlemen who are directed by God. They must not be drinkers, brawlers, or motivated by greed.

“For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;”   Titus 1:7

WE UNDERSTAND THAT THOSE IN LEADERSHIP MUST BE HOSPITABLE: They must be sober and even-tempered men who live pure and holy lives. They must have a sincere love for others, especially other Christians, and they should regularly open their homes to guests.

“But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;”  Titus 1:8

WE EXPECT CHURCH LEADERS TO BE STRONG IN THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF SOUND DOCTRINE, AND APT TO TEACH: Only those who are both able and inclined to teach should be in church leadership.

“Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.”   Titus 1:9

WE UNDERSTAND THAT A MAN’S SPOUSE OR CHILDREN MAY DISQUALIFY HIM FROM LEADERSHIP: A man must first be able to rule his own home well before he is given a position of leadership in the church.

“Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.”   1 Timothy 3:11, 12

WE BELIEVE THAT LEADERSHIP IN THE CHURCH IS A SOBER RESPONSIBILITY, NOT A RIGHT: Desiring to become a leader in the church can be a good thing, however, every man must learn first how to be a proper leader in his own life and home. Only then should he be entrusted with a position of authority in the local assembly.

“This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.”   1 Timothy 3:1
